Few places in Bangladesh capture the beauty of nature and culture as perfectly as Jaflong. Nestled on the border between Bangladesh and India, itβs where the rolling green hills of Meghalaya meet the clear waters of the Piyain River.
When I first arrived, the sound of flowing water and the sight of distant clouds touching the hilltops made me pause β it felt like a postcard come to life. Jaflong isnβt just a destination; itβs an experience of harmony between land, water, and people.
Background & About the Place
Jaflong is located in the Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet, about 60 km from the main city. Known as the βDaughter of Nature,β itβs famous for its stone collection activities, breathtaking landscapes, and tribal Khasi villages.
Across the river lies Indiaβs Meghalaya State, and on clear days, you can even see the Dawki Hills and waterfalls flowing down the Indian side.
The Piyain River that runs through Jaflong carries millions of smooth stones, shaping the lives of the locals who collect them daily. Despite its bustling activity, Jaflong still holds a deep calm β especially during early mornings and golden sunsets.
My Experience
I visited Jaflong on many occasions, on my last visit I went early in the morning, when the mist still lingered over the water. The river glowed in soft light, and the sound of boats creaking gently made everything feel timeless.
I spent hours capturing drone shots of the river, boats, and the surrounding hills β the aerial view looked like a living painting. I also visited a nearby Khasi village, where I met women weaving Shital Pati mats and drying betel leaves β an incredible glimpse into tribal life.
By the time the sun set, the hills turned golden and the river shimmered β a perfect ending to a day Iβll never forget.
